Connection with the Enlightenment

According to research “Bach was the revolutionary worship leader of his day whose progressive style often met opposition in the church.” Nonetheless, Bach continued to write his music and gain recognition in both religious and secular spheres. Although, the Enlightenment significantly influenced his music, Bach’s greatest influence was his Lutheran faith. Bach was deeply religious and he believed that “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” He even signed his compositions (both religious and secular) Soli Deo Gloria which means “to the only God be glory.”
